Reader's Journal

" A Child Called It" has definitely changed the way I look at life. I'm so glad that I got to read this book. It was so hard to put down right from the first page. It was so sad but interesting at the same time and had me hooked. This novel helped me better understand children who have dealt with abuse and neglect at home. It made me realize how severe child abuse can be and it made me think about how even when rough patches hit you in life, you have to keep pushing. This book is really deep and can get the best of your emotions and have you crying midway through the book. The fact that Dave didn't really have anyone to count on or look up to shows how strong he was especially at a young age. He had to think for himself and play the game to survive, which is crazy. He could've easily let go but he didn't he held on and later it paid off. When I was reading the book it felt like I could feel his pain, I wanted to jump into the book and help him! This book has forever changed me, and I think I am so much more thankful to have parents who take care of me, encourage me, and stand behind me in everything I do. I was so shocked when I read how David's daily life was and everything he went through. The thing that shocked me the most was that it was a true story. It is the 3rd worse case documented in the state of California. I couldn't imagine what the other 2 kids went through... In the end what doesn't kill you makes you stronger and that definitely applied to Dave Pelzer in this novel. I have so much more respect for him and other kids who have went through similar experiences.
